Intertextuality

Intertextuality. What is it?

Based on what I found in my research from other websites, intertextuality is basically the interdependent ways in which texts stand in relation to one another (as well as the culture at large) to produce meaning. What I learnt from my lecturer Daniel Chong's class, he said that a work/art/movie that is borrowing and transformation some other's author's or director's work, this is also classify as intertextuality. For me, I will said that, intertextuality might be anything around us. What we use, what we see, is actually repeating or just the same thing but in a very different way to represent it. Or it is also something that retold and reuse.

Here are some examples of intertextuality.

Movie: The Amazing Spider-Man
There are haircuts that refers to the character of the movie.

A Step Into The Past
Drama in 2001.
Three Kingdoms.
Drama in 2012.
Both drama has same storyline. It is about the main character back to the past. (by high technology)
Even some other country like korea drama also has this kind of storyline.
Storyline back to the past not only use in Chinese but also use in other country.
Some of story might be back to future.

Even this intertextuality theory is also used in fashion.

The 80's.
Today (21th century).
(photo from We Heart It)
The similarity which is the style. High waist pants/shorts/skirts with super short top.

High waist fashion is a popular in the 80's and now this fashion is famous again.
Many youngster fashion is getting back to the 80's.

Feedback loops & Cybernatics

Cybernatics

I found a video that is about cybernatics to understand more about the whole theory.

Cybernatics is the theoretical study of communication and control processes in biological, mechanical, and electronic systems, especially comparison of these processes in biological and artificial systems. The simple ways to define cybernatics is, cybernatics is about communication and control.
Now, lets see how Feedback loops & Cybernatics theory used on o2 jam dancing game.
The Process Model of Communication of o2jam:
The user experience that playing on different device is not same.
o2 Jam on PC
1. Main Page: choose server ->room page
2. Setting Page: adjust key placement, 7 keys
3. Online mode : chat, interaction between user
4. Shops: costume/musical instrument (accessories)
5. Music/song: more
6. Keyboard: music will appear when pressing each keys
7. Others: sounds effect while typing the keyboard (tap tap tap)
8. Problem: dc, lag, computer error, no wireless/ internet
o2Jam on Iphone
1. Main Page: everything pack together (start, my info, option, store, news, update)
2. Option page: choose level - easy, normal, hard speed
3. Offline mode: Facebook share the result/ achievement
4. Store: music
5. Music/song: less
6. Touch screen: no sound when pressing the keys
7. Others: sliding system
8. Problem: incoming call, "keyboard" too small, easy to tap wrong(finger too pack), battery life is lower, sensitivity of the screen while touch it.

Semiotics on Chinese 24 seasons drums

Semiotics (semiology), is the study of sign, symbols and signification. This theory show us how things created, what is the meaning behind, how it forms and etc, from the most basic meaning and proceeding  to more complex.

These are some brief definitions of semiotic terms.
Brief definitions of semiotic terms.

I just choose few of them (the more familiar one) to transfer this theory into Chinese 24 seasons drums later.

1.Denotation
2.Connotation
3.Myths

Before we go into the theory, lets roughly go through what is a Chinese 24 seasons drums.

This chinese culture was started from Malaysia. It was a kind of art performance. A unit consists of twenty four(24) drums. It represents agricultural seasons from the Chinese calendar.
Chinese 24 seasons drums will only perform during Chinese New Year, some event such as opening ceremony, and even funeral.

1. Denotation of Chinese 24 seasons drums.
The outer meaning/ observation of the drums.

colour: red and black

2. Connotation of Chinese 24 seasons drums.
The texture of the drums and costume.

3. Myth of Chinese 24 seasons drums.
The meaning behind of the Chinese 24 seasons drums.

A typical Malaysian 24 Seasons unit consists of twenty four drums. The number twenty four is represents agricultural seasons from the Chinese calendar.
Examples: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter

The first drum troupe in Malaysia is from High School "Kuan Rou", Johor.

Every drum troupe has their different ways to perform. Even the costume, the style, the arrangement of the drums and etc, has their own meaning.

"War between devil and angels."
As you can see, the black and white costume is represent the  characters of devil and angels.
This is about a human soul is always have either a devil or an angels. Sometimes it is hard to judge or decide something right or wrong.

This troupe performs "The sounds of farmer".
The costume brings out the character of farmer.
The story line is about the first experience of some farmer is playing with the drums.
The only one girls troupe in Malaysia.
Present "Remembered death mother during mid-autumn festival/moon cake festival."
The story line is about a girl lost her mom in a fire disaster when she was sleeping in the midnight.
Therefore, they wear pajamas as their costume.
Perform "After winter".
This is about the activities of a village of people after winter.
Props are also used during the performance.(Snow)

Found this very cool while finding some inspiration.
